Shawclough Primary School is home to the Rainforest Provision for children with complex needs
‘.. the provision will be a distinct entity, but there will be a continuity in appearance, to ensure that students will feel part of the wider school community. This will mitigate against any potential feeling of “stigmatisation” for children and families attending the provision.’
The LA were confident in our ability to open another provision due to the success of Rainbow and initially commissioned 6 places which is now full. Our drive will always be to do what is best for the children of Rochdale a town which we are very proud to be a part of. ‘this is school which truly make a difference’
The Rainforest provision is now up and running and provides fun while supporting children to reach their full potential in a caring, safe and supportive environment. We ensure that the children's personalised plans are embedded into activities throughout the day. Children will develop these skills through a range of adult scaffolding and clear routines using objects of reference, visuals and clear instructions.
The curriculum has focused on communication and independence, sensory regulation and developing social skills. Personal care and self help skills are also deep rooted into to the curriculum. We have created a calming environment with strong staff and child relationships that allow and encourage children to be themselves and to make choices but with a robust emphasis on progress. We have small class sizes with a high adult ratio and resources to enable us to support our children the very best we can.
Rainforest have 2 large learn/play areas, a sensory room and their own outside yard too.

Rowan Rush heads our Rainforest Provision, with a brilliant team of TAs beside her. Just as Rainbow do, this team goes over and above all that is expected of them and are loved by the children they teach and support.
What if…
‘If this hadn’t happened where would these children be? Failing in mainstream? Failing in a pupil referral unit? Dysregulated in a SEMH school? Unhappy, suicidal, self-harming, the statistics frightening. We took a leap for the children of Rochdale. It’s been an amazing roller coaster for all of us. We wouldn’t have it any other way.’ (Head Teacher, Julia Sandiford-Mitchell)
