At Shawclough, we aim to provide children with an experience of history which is valid, stimulating and informative. We want to inspire the pupils' curiosity to know more about the past. We encourage a lively questioning approach, which will enable children to develop an interest in the past, and how the events of the past affect the present day.

In Key Stage 1 the children will develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time. They need to have an understanding of where the people and places they study fit. It is important for them to understand some of the ways in which we find out about the past.

In Key Stage 2 the children continue to develop a chronological understanding of British, local and world history. They will note connections, contrasts and trends over time. We encourage the children to construct informed responses through the selection of relevant historical information.
