Strengthening Families Program

The Strengthening Families Programme (10-14)

• The Strengthening Families Programme is a six week course, which young people attend with their parents or carers

• The courses run every Wednesday morning, 9.30-12.30. Authorised absences from school are arranged.

• Lunch is provided, and transport for those families without own transport is also provided

• The course is aimed at young people aged 10 – 14 and we alternate the running of the courses for two different age groups:

Years 5, 6, and 7

Years 8, 9 and 10

• In the first half of the session, parents and young people are in separate groups, and then meet together in the second half for a family session.

The sessions conclude with eating lunch together

• The course is particularly useful where there are relationship difficulties between parents/carers and children, behaviour issues, where children

are getting involved in Anti Social Behaviour or substance misuse, or where attendance or behaviour in school may be an issue

• When a referral has been received, the family will be given a home visit to discuss the course and ensure suitability

Parent sessions focus on:

Using love and limits, making house rules, encouraging good behaviour, using consequences, protecting against substance misuse

Youth sessions focus on:

Goals and dreams for the future, understanding parents, handling stress and anger, rules and responsibility, and dealing with peer pressure

Family sessions focus on:

Appreciating family members, communication, and understanding family values
