The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK's biggest reading for pleasure programme in libraries for primary school aged children, with 800,000 children taking part last year. Founded in 1999, the Challenge now runs in 98% of UK library authorities. Tesco Bank has supported the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland since 2011 with the additional funding providing opportunities for children to meet authors and illustrators during the summer.

This year's Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge is linking up with the global year-long Roald Dahl 100 celebrations, honouring the world's No.1 storyteller. The Big Friendly Read will feature some of Roald Dahl's best-loved characters and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. It will encourage reading on a giant scale and each child's collector folder will feature themes such as invention, mischief and friendship as explored in Roald Dahl's books. The Big Friendly Read will encourage children to expand their own reading by exploring similar themes across the best contemporary children's writing.
